Apply for an exemption

If you are a full time student, you can apply for a Council Tax exemption.

You can find more information about who counts as a student on GOV.UK.

You can apply for a student exemption, if:

  • you are the only adult living in your property
  • you are a full-time student
  • you provide a valid student exemption certificate

You will not have to pay Council Tax for the duration of your course.

Discount

You can apply for a 25% discount on your Council Tax, if:

  • you live alone with a full-time student
  • the student you live with provides a valid student exemption certificate

If two or more people living at the property are not full-time students, you can't claim a discount.

Landlord of a HMO

You can apply for a student exemption, if:

  • you are the landlord of a House of Multiple Occupation (HMO)and all occupiers are full-time students
  • the students that live at the property provide valid student exemption certificates

If one or more people living at the property are not full-time students, there will be a charge to pay.

You will still need to tell us which people living there are full-time students, and provide their student certificates.

You can tell us if students have moved in our out of a property.

Student Exemption Certificate

Your Student Exemption Certificate must state:

  • your full name
  • the name of the course you are studying for
  • the date you start the course
  • the date you finish the course
  • your full time student status 

The certificate must be on headed paper with a stamp from the college or university that you are studying

How to apply

To apply for a student exemption, you will need:

  • a Student Exemption Certificate (which you can get from your college or university)
  • your Council Tax account number
  • your name, address and contact details
