Empty and unfurnished properties
If your property is unoccupied and unfurnished, there is a 100% empty property discount available.
This discount lasts for three months from the date a property becomes unoccupied and unfurnished. After three months, we will charge Council Tax in full.
The discount applies to the property, not the person responsible for paying Council Tax. This means if a previous owner or tenant has claimed part of this discount, you can only claim it for the remaining time.
We will only apply a new period of the discount if:
- you leave the property empty and unfurnished
- somebody has previously occupied it for at least six weeks
To apply for a discount for an empty property, you will need:
- your Council Tax account number
- your full name
- your address
- your contact details
- to tell us when the property became unoccupied and unfurnished
Long-term empty properties
A Long-term Empty Premium is an additional Council Tax charge for properties that remain empty for an extended amount of time.
From 1 April 2024 for properties that have been continuously empty for more than one year we charge a premium:
Certain categories of empty property do not have to pay the premium charge as they qualify for an exception. You can find more details and an application form on our exceptions for long-term empty properties and second homes page.
