Three key modern technologies - telecommunications, electrical engineering and rolling bearings - were pioneered by the Chelmsford based firms Marconi, Crompton and Hoffmann. This gives Chelmsford a unique place in the story of technology, and this is what we commemorate at Sandford Mill. Sandford Mill is Chelmsford's old waterworks, situated on the River Chelmer to the south of Chelmer Village. In the waterworks buildings Chelmsford Museums Service stores its industrial collections and archives, but Sandford Mill is much more than a museum store: Industrial Museum
On public open days Sandford Mill becomes an industrial museum, where visitors can discover the story of Chelmsford's unique industrial heritage and something of the science which lay behind it. (See Open Days page) Schools Science Centre From April to October Sandford Mill offers local schools a unique science learning resource, with hands-on sessions based on the industrial collections and a range of purpose-designed interactive activities. From November to March Sandford Mill hires kits to schools, to bring hands-on science into the classroom. Nature Reserve Sandford Mill's extensive wildlife habitats can be explored at special wildlife walks, held in the summer. (See Museum Events page) Sandford Mill is run with the help of the Friends of Chelmsford Museums and other ex-industry volunteers. It relies on the support of several voluntary bodies including Chelmsford Amateur Radio Society, the Radio Officers' Association, the Marconi Veterans Association and the The Susan Trust. Susan is the last wooden Chelmer Barge and is moored at Sandford Mill. For further information please telephone us on 01245 475498 or email sandfordmill@chelmsford.gov.uk.
